Venerable Yi Lai

Abbess

Fo Guang Shan Melbourne

Once again, I wish to express my sincerest gratitude to all our distinguished guests, members of BLIA, Volunteers, Dharma friends and all those who have supported this event and helped to make this year’s Buddha’s Day and Multicultural Day a success.

It is getting better and bigger each year. We are grateful for your continuing support and we look forward to future years of mutual collaboration.

As more and more people have an interest in Buddhist teachings, Buddhism is the fastest growing religion in Australia and the world. This is only possible because of your acceptance of the different cultures and traditions which form part of the colourful fabric of Australia. Multiculturalism is widely accepted and integrated in our daily lives as seen by the number of different cultures in Melbourne alone.

The spirit of multiculturalism is derived from tolerance and compassion in which Buddhism shares the same spirit. The Buddhist philosophy and way of living in harmony embraces differences through understanding and education.  It is the key to unlocking one's prejudices and biases.  When this happens our troubles and worries would diminish, bringing more joy and happiness to self and others.

Today we are all affected by the economic tsunami, we need to be more forgiving and supportive of each other.  When we see the inter-connectedness with one another there would be no discrimination.

Buddhism welcomes all to awaken oneself and to live life.  May you live life to its full potential in harmony and peace.

Blessings from the Buddha and best wishes for the forthcoming year.
