Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art practiced for both its defense training and health benefits. The focus of the mind on the movements of the form helps to bring about a state of mental calm and clarity. Sometimes referred to as “meditation in motion”, Tai Chi is a slow moving low-impact form of exercise that is often practiced in groups.
Buddha’s Light International Association of Victoria and Fo Guang Shan Melbourne are proud to welcome Tai Chi Master, Leonie Leong to the 22nd annual Buddha’s Day & Multicultural Festival.
Born to martial arts Grand Master Lawrence Leong in Malaysia, Leonie Leong started formal training at a tender age of seven years old. Her late father, Grand Master Lawrence Leong founded Hapkune-Do Martial Arts Gymnasium, Hapkune-Do Lion Dance Troupe and Hapkune-Do Chinese Sports Injury Clinic Centre. In 1990, Leonie sought tutelage under the Chinese national coach of wushu, Master Shao Shan Kang where she was imparted the essence of tai chi. Well-versed in multiple wushu disciplines such as shaolin kung fu, modern wushu, Nan Quan, Chang Quan, Tai Chi Quan, swordplay, spear, broadsword and cudgel play; Leonie went on to achieve an accomplished international career. Some of her notable international achievements include achieving the gold medal of swordplay in the 5th Asian Cup International Chinese Koushu Tournament, gold medal in swordplay and taichi in the 1st World Koushu Tournament, silver medal in the 16th SEA Games for swordplay , silver medal in the 4th Asian Cup International Chinese Koushou Tournament for swordplay and being an invited judge in the 2nd World Wushu tournament.
Leonie continues to conducts Tai Chi classes to promote the essence of martial arts, since retiring from her successful Wushu career in 1997.
