Buddha's Day Purification Ceremony

What is Purification Ceremony?

Traditionally held prior to the commencement of any important Buddhist function, the Purification Ceremony marks the commencement of the Buddha’s Day and Multicultural Festival proceedings.

The Buddha’s Day Purification Ceremony is conducted by Head Abbess Venerable Man Ko of Fo Guang Shan Australia and New Zealand and Venerables of Fo Guang Shan Melbourne at the specially constructed Buddha Stage in the heart of Federation Square.

The custom of the Purification Ceremony involves chanting the Mantra of Great Mercy, one of the most sacred Buddhist texts dedicated to the Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, the Goddess of Mercy. In this ritual, blessed (or holy) water is used to purify the grounds of the festival site.

During this ceremony, the Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva and the Dharma Protectors are reverently petitioned to attend the ceremony, to protect and bestow their blessings on the celebration, so the festival is auspicious under their guidance.

Head Abbess Venerable Man Ko of Fo Guang Shan Australia and New Zealand, fellow Venerables of Fo Guang Shan Melbourne and members of Buddha’s Light International Association of Victoria invite you to witness this auspicious occasion.
