Annual World Peace Blessing Ceremony

Date/Time: Saturday, 20 May 2017 – 2:00pm – 3:30pm

Location: Buddha Stage, The Square (map G)

The Buddha’s Light International Association of Victoria and Fo Guang Shan welcomes you, your family and friends to join us in blessing for World Peace.

The Annual World Peace Blessing Ceremony is a unique celebration of the birthday of Buddha that collectively brings together a global community.

The ceremony promotes cooperation, community spirit and acknowledges cultural harmony amongst all members of our diverse multicultural society.

The ceremony will be conducted by the Chief Abbess of Fo Guang Shan Australia, Venerable Man Ko and fellow reverends of Fo Guang Shan Melbourne. Gracing our opening ceremony is our local, energetic and vigilant Chinese lion and dragon dancing group, the Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne (CYSM).

Representatives of diverse cultural backgrounds in Victoria will gather for a spectacular group offering for world peace. Dressing in splendid traditional costumes accompanied by traditional Buddhist chanting collectively symbolises the unity of humanity together, praying for a more harmonious society.

This rare occasion is also marked by a ‘Welcome to Country’ conducted by the traditional owners of the land, as well as the deliverance of messages of well wishes from dignitaries

This year’s theme ‘Consensus and Openness’  outlined by our founder Venerable Master Hsing Yun, highlights the importance of encouraging individuals to be more open-minded towards both new and traditional elements that influence our lives today. As individuals we can contribute towards openness through respect and appreciation of others’ beliefs and perspectives. In turn, we can also practice  ‘consensus’ as a process of reaching an agreement through acceptance.  We aspire to promote Humanistic Buddhism through the mottos of FGS and BLIA:

  •  ‘Three Acts of Goodness’ – Do Good Deeds, Speak Good Words, Think Good Thoughts
  •  ‘Four Offerings’ – Give Others Confidence, Give Others Joy, Give Others Convenience and Give Others Service; and
  •  ‘Five Harmonies’ – Self-Serenity, Family Tranquility, Peer Respect, Social Harmony and World Peace

We hope that each and every person will plant this seed of hope for a brighter and better future.
